Son of Nathan Van Fossen, died July 23d, 1840, and Mary (Boyce), who passed away Oct. 6th, 1817, was born in the first quarter of this century, January 9, 1804, in Perry county, Pa. On the 8th day of July, 1830, he married in Licking county, Ohio, Mary A. Sloss, born June 11, 1808, a native of Ireland, as were her parents, John and Margaret S. (Cook) Sloss. Three years after his marriage, Mr. Van Fossen settled in Williams county, Ohio, where whe was one of the most prominent citizens, holding office of Justice of the Peace for 21 years, and being Postmaster for 25 years at Spring Lake. He was removed by death Mar. 5th, 1877. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Fossen: Elizabeth A., now the widow of Mr. David Waller and a member of the W.R.C.; John W., William A., deceased, Rachel M., who was postmistress for eleven years after the death of her father, and is now a member of the W.R.C.; Mary M., deceased, Sarah A., deceased, Thomas S., Margaret E., Kezia J, and Levi, deceased. The three eldest sons, John, William and Thomas served the Union during the late war, the first in Co. A, 1st Bat. Ohio Sharpshooters; the second in Co. G, 1st B., 1st D., 14th A.C.; and the third in Co. D, 195th O.V.I. They fought in all the engagements in which their regiments participated, and were all mustered out at the close of the war; the two eldest daughters, Elizabeth and Rachel, reside in Edon, and are both earnest workers in all religious and chartiable institutions.

A native of Wayne county, Mich., was born Jan. 12, 1837, a son of William Van Fossen, who died March 5th, 1878, and Mary A. (Sloss) died May, 1879. He married in Williams county, Ohio, Feb. 18th 1869 Clarissa Ely, born in Morrow county, Ohio, Aprin 21, 1851; her father, Robert Ely, died Feb. 17, 1865, her mother Harriet (Stout), died July 19th, 1863. Four children have been born to this union: Harriet J., b. Nov. 26, 1869, married John Shafer, and lives in Edon, Ohio, Alvan U., b. March 27th, 1872, is a rising young farmer, and resides on the old farm with his mother, Mary E., b. April 8th, 1874, is fitting herself to be a teacher, and Iva I., b. Feb. 11, 1876, is taking a course in music of which she intends to make a profession. Mr. Van Fossen was engaged in farming in Lagrange county, Ind., from which place he enlisted July 4, 1862 as a private in Co. G, 88th Ind. V.I., 2nd Brig. 3d Div., 14th A.C., April 30th 1865, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Dec. 9th, 1863, he was confined to hospital at Chattanooga, Tenn., was also in different hospitals at various times. He took part in the battles of Perrysville, and Stone River and numerous other engagements, and was with Sherman on his raid from Atlant to the sea. He died at his home in Williams county, Ohio, Sept. 14th, 1877, with consumption caused by exposure while in the army. He had two brothers in the Union service, John W. and Thomas S., both of whom are now living. Mrs. Van Fossen also had two brothers in the Union army, Ezra R., died in hospital at Raleigh, Miss., Jan. 10th 1862, with measles, and Joseph, who is still living. The grandfather of Mrs. Van Fossen was a Colonel in the war of 1812. Mrs. Van Fossen may be addressed at Spring Lake, O.

Was a farmer in Williams county, Ohio, at the time of his enlistment from Toledo, Ohio, March 4, 1865, at the age of 20, as a private in Co. D, 195th O.V.I., 4th Brig., 3d Div., 23rd A.C.; his services consisted of guard and garrison duty until he was connected with the Freedmen's Refugee Bureau from Nov. 20th, 1865, until his honorable discharge at Alexandria, Va. Dec. 18, 1865. Mr. Van Fossen was born in Williams county, and married, March 22d, 1885 Elizabeth A. Clark, born in Crawford county, Ohio, Aug. 14th, 1846. Mr. Van Fossen's father, William Van Fossen, born in 1801, in Perry county, Pa., died in 1879, aged 75; his mother, Mary Ann (Sloss), born in 1808, in county Caven, Ireland, died in 1880, aged 72. Mrs. Van Fossen's father, Morgan Clark, born in Crawford county, Ohio, and her mother, Dorcas A. (Joice) born in 1824, in Maryland, are both living. Two brothers of Comrade Van Fossen served in the late war, John W., and William A., who died at his home in Williams county, in Sept. 1877, from lung trouble brought on by exposure during service; John W., is still alive and live in Lagrange county, Ind., was a member of the first Ohio sharp shooters. Comrade Van Fossen belongs to the Chas Bates Post, 636, is a farmer living on the old homestead that his father entered on the 10th of Oct. 1810, and has in his possession the old patent deed given during Van Buren's administration and signed by Van Buren; draws a pension, and his address is Spring Lake, Williams county, Ohio.
